Project Engineer
How does a permanent four-day working week, Monday to Thursday, with every Friday off sound? In this Project Engineer role, you will help make the safe removal of nuclear-contaminated legacy plant a reality, working at the sharp end of the UK’s nuclear clean-up mission. Every solution you deliver directly reduces risk, protects people and the environment, and contributes to the long-term decommissioning of the UK nuclear estate.
You will join a stable, long-term, multi-year programme and work alongside an experienced and supportive site team. The work is varied, technically interesting and grounded in real operational challenges, offering the chance to see your engineering decisions move from concept through to implementation at the workface.
What you will be doing
You will be site-based and accountable for engineering activities across the full project lifecycle. From understanding stakeholder needs and developing practical engineering solutions, through to guiding detailed design and supporting commissioning and decommissioning, your focus will be on delivering robust, safe and compliant outcomes in a high-hazard environment.
The role blends hands-on technical problem solving with coordination across contractors, designers and site teams. You will remain closely involved as engineering solutions move from desktop into implementation at the workface, helping resolve practical challenges as they arise and ensuring plant modifications and engineering changes are delivered safely. Key aspects of the role also include:
- Translating project requirements into practical engineering solutions that consider constructability, operability and site constraints from the outset
- Defining key constraints, attributes and assumptions, and developing engineering deliverables that support solutions from concept through to implementation
- Acting as a Nominated Responsible Engineer for plant modifications when required, ensuring engineering work is properly considered, safe and compliant
- Where required, working in controlled radiological environments (C3 & C4), confined spaces and areas requiring respiratory protection
Who are we looking for:
You will bring experience from a practising engineering role gained in an industrial or highly regulated environment. You do not need a nuclear background to succeed, but you do need confidence working to strict standards, an appetite to learn and the ability to apply good engineering judgement to practical engineering challenges. Full specialist training will be provided.
You will be qualified to a minimum of HNC level or equivalent, and comfortable reviewing risk, interpreting engineering standards and working with contractors to deliver practical solutions. Experience in project engineering, CDM awareness and knowledge of quality and safety management systems would be beneficial, however attitude, ownership and problem-solving capability are just as important. Along with this, we are particularly keen to hear from engineers who can:
- Take ownership of engineering problems and drive practical solutions through to implementation
- Work collaboratively with suppliers, designers and site teams, including supporting engineering activities at the workface
- Interpret and apply engineering standards proportionately, maintaining control of documentation and supporting safe working practices
- Communicate technical information clearly through concise written deliverables and confident verbal interaction
