Waste Engineer

Are you looking for a role where your expertise genuinely shapes the decommissioning of a historic nuclear site? Would you enjoy working in a place where your decisions directly influence environmental outcomes for future generations?

We are seeking a capable and motivated Waste Engineer to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a strong academic and/or with technical experience in Waste Management. You should have an understanding and working knowledge of Waste Classification and Coding, Duty of Care, Hazardous Waste Management and working knowledge of Radioactive Waste Management.

With a four‑day working week from Monday to Thursday, it’s a role that offers both challenge and balance.

What will you be doing

You’ll play a central role in guiding decommissioning programmes through waste and transport legislation. Your advice will shape decisions across the site, ensuring waste is handled safely, compliantly and with the environment in mind. You’ll also help develop and refine waste strategies, supporting the teams who manage both radioactive and non‑active waste movements.

Alongside this, you’ll provide the site with technical support. You’ll help define what good waste management looks like, encourage continuous improvement and build trust with internal and external stakeholders who rely on your technical judgement.

Key areas you’ll influence:

  • Development, maintenance and management of technical databases and spreadsheets used for waste management purposes.
  • Advising on waste and dangerous goods legislation for decommissioning activities.
  • Providing clear technical guidance to project teams.
  • Supporting the safe consignment of radioactive and non‑active wastes from site.

Who are we looking for

You’ll bring solid technical grounding and practical experience in nuclear waste management. You understand environmental and legislative requirements and know how to help teams apply them in a safe and efficient way. A background in the nuclear industry is essential, ideally with hands‑on involvement in waste operations or waste inventory work.

In this role you will need to have a collaborative attitude, analytical skills and able to advise on waste matters to ensure compliance with regulations, environmental permits and waste acceptance criteria.

You will work towards development in Dangerous Goods Transport and Radiological Fingerprint Practitioner authorisations for the Site.

Experience in Dangerous Goods/ADR and consignment of Class 7 material would be advantageous.

You’ll need:

  • An HNC or equivalent qualification in a scientific, engineering or environmental discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental and waste‑related legislation, including radioactive and controlled wastes.
  • Experience in nuclear waste management and working within regulated environments.
  • (Desirable) Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor certification and experience developing waste inventories.
