Waste & Decommissioning Technician
Are you looking for a hands‑on technical role where your work directly supports the safe, compliant decommissioning of a nationally significant site? Do you want to join a team where every day brings new challenges, new skills, and the chance to contribute to one of the UK’s largest waste processing programmes?
At Hinkley Point A, we are responsible for the safe processing of Controlled and Low‑Level Waste material that makes up around 94% of all radioactive waste in the UK by volume. As we move through a critical phase of decommissioning, we’re looking for motivated Waste Technicians to join our experienced team, supporting operations that will continue well into the decade and beyond. With structured training, practical learning, and a four‑day working week, this is an excellent opportunity to build a specialist technical career within a highly regulated environment.
What will you be doing
As a Waste Technician, you’ll play a central role in keeping waste processing operations safe, compliant, and efficient. Working closely with skilled colleagues, you’ll take responsibility for the packaging, monitoring, movement, and safe handling of materials generated through the decommissioning process. You’ll operate plant and equipment, support routine maintenance, and ensure waste areas remain controlled, organised, and fully compliant with regulations.
You’ll also follow a structured training pathway including classroom learning in health physics, work shadowing, and on‑the‑job capability building to ensure you become fully competent and confident in all aspects of the role. Over time, you may also be trained in additional specialist functions to further develop your skills and career.
Key parts of your role will include:
- Carrying out waste management duties such as packaging, collection, and safe transport of materials.
- Performing advanced health physics monitoring of equipment, plant, and work areas.
- Operating waste‑processing and volume‑reduction equipment within your demonstrated competence.
- Supporting dismantling and removal of hazardous structures, materials, and equipment.
Who are we looking for
You’ll be someone who enjoys practical, hands‑on work and has experience in an industrial environment where safety and attention to detail are essential. Alongside an appropriate technical qualification such as a City & Guilds, BTEC, or NVQ at Level 2 you’ll bring the right mindset: reliable, safety‑focused, and eager to learn. Experience in waste management or radiological environments is desirable but not essential our training programme will ensure you gain everything you need to succeed.
You’ll thrive in this role if you’re comfortable working in a highly regulated setting, able to follow procedures accurately, and willing to undertake structured development as part of your personal progression. A solid understanding of safe working practices and a readiness to contribute to a collaborative team environment are key to success.
You’ll be a great fit if you:
- Hold a relevant technical qualification or have practical experience that demonstrates strong technical capability.
- Have experience working in industrial settings where safety and compliance are paramount.
- Are keen to develop specialist skills in waste operations, health physics, and plant/equipment use.
- Maintain a positive, proactive approach and enjoy working as part of a skilled, supportive team.
