What will you be doing:

In this role, you’ll become the central point of ownership for critical plant systems, developing and maintaining long‑term engineering strategies that ensure safety, reliability and compliance. You’ll shape system health by analysing performance trends, conducting routine system walkdowns, and applying learning from operational experience to drive continuous improvement. Produce and Manage modification proposals and act as the Nominated Responsible Engineer (NRE) for plant modifications. As a trusted technical authority, you’ll also contribute to essential documentation, system modifications and safety‑related decisions, helping safeguard operations now and into the future.

You’ll work alongside a skilled team, providing proactive support to projects, mentoring fellow engineers and deputise for the Section Head when required. This role also offers the opportunity to grow into positions of greater influence, including working towards the site’s LOLER Compliance Manager and fulfilling delegated Design Authority responsibilities. Key areas of impact include:

  • Owning assigned systems/assets, ensuring compliance with PSSR, PUWER and LOLER requirements.
  • Developing long‑term engineering strategies and making recommendations for system and/or asset investments. Recording, analysing and acting on system performance data to maintain safe, reliable operation.
  • Producing and approving key technical documentation for assigned systems such as Technical Specifications, Work Instructions, Method Statements, Plant Item Operating Instructions, Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments Recording, analysing and acting on system performance data to maintain safe, reliable operation.
  • Providing technical leadership to projects and maintain a good overall knowledge of the safety case as it applies to the assigned systems and know the functional requirements, key limits and conditions for safe operation.
  • Comply with the site’s Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures, work instructions and risk assessments and support the continuous improvement of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards.

To excel in this role, you'll bring a solid technical foundation combined with hands‑on experience in mechanical engineering across complex or ageing industrial plant. You’ll have a strong grasp of statutory requirements and engineering standards, enabling you to make confident, informed decisions that protect system integrity and operational safety.

You will have:

  • Minimum National Qualifications Framework NQF level 5, preferably a relevant Degree (NQF Level 6) or working towards.
  • Extensive experience in a practising disciplined Engineering role - Mechanical on industrial plant/equipment including aging assets.
  • Strong mechanical asset maintenance, operation and/or maintenance expertise.
  • Detailed knowledge of PSSR, PUWER, LOLER and an understanding of relevant company/national engineering standards.

It would be advantageous to have a working knowledge of the Safety Rules and detailed knowledge of risk assessment methodology and relevant Site Licence and Quality Management System requirements, as well as contract management experience.

It would be beneficial to be a member of a relevant Engineering Institute and have chartered status but this is not essential.
