NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

Senior Safety Case Engineer (Grade G/SP46) BR-140.

“The Engineering team is made up of a group of highly skilled and multi-disciplined Engineers. This is an excellent opportunity for an established, driven and flexible nuclear safety case engineer to join the core engineering team at Trawsfynydd Site. The purpose of this role is to deliver nuclear safety case related work and associated documentation in support of operational and compliance activities at the Site.”

Key Deliverables:

  • Determine strategies for individual Safety Cases acting as Safety Case Officer, Author or Verifier where nominated.
  • Write and/or verify complex Safety Cases in accordance with Company Standards.
  • Write and/or verify documents supporting the safety case production process such as fault grouping reports, safety case strategy statements and radiological dose assessments.
  • Manage the production of Safety Cases and deliverables being provided by others as input to the Safety Cases.
  • Provide advice and guidance on applications of Safety Case methodology / principles and provide supporting information in interactions with INSA, Nuclear Safety Committee and the regulators.
  • Become a key enabler in the Site’s modification process and become a Responsible Engineer for relevant modification proposals.
  • Provide Safety Assessment support for Site Security and Radiological & Environmental Protection.
  • The flexibility to support the engineering team and other key site functions and projects in relevant engineering and compliance related work.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A degree in a suitable technical subject, e.g. mechanical engineering / physics, National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 6 (Essential); a postgraduate qualification relating to Safety Engineering (Desirable).
  • Substantial experience of technical writing, including nuclear safety cases.
  • Understanding of engineering safety and the derivation of Safety Functional Requirements. Knowledge of hazard identification and analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge of safety case standards, processes and applications relevant to a nuclear decommissioning site (e.g. fault schedule production, ALARP justification).
  • Experience of working on-site at a Nuclear Decommissioning Site (or similar). #INDOR

There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
