Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About the role

The NRS Future Missions team is responsible for growing the NRS portfolio, focussing on the transfer of the seven Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs) from EDF as well as the responsibility for decommissioning the MoD Vulcan facility adjacent to Dounreay and assessing other opportunities, including collaboration with the defence sector.  This is an exciting time for the team as we are trusted to do more and many projects are first of a kind for us.

Decommissioning/deconstruction is core business for NRS, so we are recruiting a Senior Project Engineer to work as a subject matter expert (SME) on the technical strategy and delivery of deconstruction across a range of projects and programmes.  Reporting to the Chief Engineer for Future Missions, you will be responsible for helping to shape approaches to deconstruction integrated with the waste management strategy in collaboration with external organisations, and for coordinating expert support from NRS’s existing missions: NRS Sites and NRS Dounreay. The role is a new position in the team and would be ideally suited to someone with who is confident in engaging with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and enjoys working collaboratively.

Key Deliverables

  • Provision of authoritative advice on deconstruction options and their delivery based on Operational Experience (OPEX) and First of a Kind Learning from NRS for Magnox Reactors and Research Reactors
  • Provision of advice and support to the AGRs Transition & Transfer Programme on technical strategic alignment
  • Supporting the synergy groups to identify, assess and sentence opportunities to improve on the baseline decommissioning plans based on OPEX and to coordinate the peer review of proposed strategies and scopes of work to confirm that they are robust and deliverable.
  • Identification and coordination of specialist technical input from the business to inform strategic decision making for the AGRs
  • Collaborative working with EDF to develop optimised Site-Specific Deconstruction Plans for the AGRs ahead of their transfer to NRS
  • Review and development of the Vulcan NRTE Decommissioning Plan
  • Provision of advice and support on Civil-Defence Nuclear Liabilities Collaboration and wider business development opportunities

Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree or equivalent in an engineering or related discipline (Essential)
  • Membership of a relevant Engineering Institution or evidence of working at an equivalent level (Desirable)
  • Relevant experience in a range of technical areas applicable to decommissioning and deconstruction of nuclear power plants (Essential)
  • Relevant experience in the nuclear industry in delivery of engineering projects (design and build as well as deconstruction), sharing of learning and best practices, optioneering and optimisation (Desirable)
  • Experience of contributing to and leading Options Assessments, business cases or strategy papers (Desirable)
  • Experience of communicating with internal and external stakeholders / organisations, for example regulators and the supply chain (Desirable)
  • Experience of authoring technical reports (Essential)
  • Experience in production of engineering concept drawings (Essential)

There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
