Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

Radiological Specialist - Shielding Assay

"The Radiological Assessment & Disposability Team is recruiting a Radiological Specialist (Assay & Shielding) to support delivery of a variety of radiological assessment, waste assay and design activities across NRS Waste & Decommissioning projects.
The team is central to the delivery of radiological assessments to underpin decommissioning design and waste packaging strategies across all sites, providing plenty of opportunity to be involved in a diverse and varied portfolio (including AGR sites post-transfer).
The role will require the individual to be technically competent, solution orientated and have excellent problem solving and communication skills."
Please note this is a hybrid role, with the expectation of working at our office in Bradley Stoke (BS32 4QQ) or another NRS site a minimum of two days per week.
Key Deliverables
- To act as a practitioner in a range of radiological disciplines, providing technical advice and guidance across NRS as required.
- Working to deliver appropriate radiological assessment, shielding assessments & assay system design to underpin waste and decommissioning projects.
- Implement waste characterisation strategies (including DQO, sampling & analysis, waste assay plans etc) for a variety of waste facilities and materials across the sites.
- Support LLW operational assay systems across the sites.
- Provide technical advice in radiological inventory assessment and source term derivation to support the development of waste project strategies.
- Knowledge of waste processing routes and consignment criteria to meet ILW and LLW disposal WAC.
- Undertake Design Authority roles in specialist areas.
- As a customer-focused individual, the post holder will be expected to support delivery within his or her range of skills, knowledge, experience and competence.
- Appreciation and understanding of the engineering design process, risk management and safety case requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in suitable technical subject, National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 6 (essential).
- Technical experience in radiological disciplines relevant to a waste management and decommissioning organisation (desirable).
- Knowledge of relevant Regulations applicable to management, transport and packaging of radioactive waste (desirable).
- Post holders will be required to demonstrate excellent communication skills, liaising with both internal and external stakeholders (desirable).

- The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
