QA & Records Manager

About the role

If you’re looking for a role where your work genuinely matters — where accuracy, leadership and purpose come together — this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of Harwell’s Remote Handled Waste processing mission. You’ll join a team of highly skilled professionals who are dedicated to safely managing radioactive waste streams that play a crucial part in the site’s ongoing operations and long‑term environmental responsibility.

In this role, you’ll take the lead on ensuring every waste package record is accurate, compliant and ready for future off‑site transfer. Your work will directly support safe operations by making sure all waste processing aligns with Safety Case requirements and meets the standards expected by Nuclear Waste Services and other key partners. If you take pride in precision, enjoy working with data, and want to contribute to work that has real national impact, this is a place where your strengths will shine — and where your contribution will truly count.

What will you be doing

In this role, you’ll provide effective leadership across all Quality Assured nuclear waste records and associated operational support activities including oversight of a small, dedicated team. You’ll use Access© and Paradox© databases to manage radioactive waste inventory data and any related Safety Case information, enabling waste to move safely through required processing routes while generating fully compliant package records. As part of your duties, you’ll act as a Nuclear Material Custodian — maintaining accurate nuclear material inventories, ensuring the NRS accountancy system is always up to date, and carrying out inventory checks with the support of system‑specific training where required.

You’ll oversee the full lifecycle of waste records across paper and electronic formats, ensuring all documentation is scanned, checked, uploaded, and maintained to the highest standards. Alongside this, you’ll manage team workload, performance, development and communication, ensuring staff competency remains strong and aligned with expectations. You’ll maintain accurate technical documents, support the interface between the B462 facility and the Harwell Site Waste Team, and champion full compliance with SSHEQ policies and procedures while contributing to continuous improvement. Emergency scheme duties may be required as part of this role.

Who are we looking for

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring solid experience in nuclear waste management, working with a broad range of alpha, beta and gamma emitting wastes in various forms. You’ll hold a degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant scientific, environmental or engineering discipline at NQF Level 5 or above. A strong understanding of the practices, legislation, stakeholders and policies surrounding radioactive waste management is essential, along with experience developing waste inventories and managing both electronic and hard‑copy waste records to high standards.

You’ll also bring strong IT skills and the confidence to work with relational databases, with training available to build your capability further. Knowledge of the operational and safety controls used within nuclear facilities will help you contribute effectively to safe, compliant operations from day one.
