Permit Officer
Stepping into a role where every decision support safety, precision, and successful project delivery can be incredibly rewarding—especially when you’re at the heart of a major site’s safe system of work. The Permit Officer position at Chapelcross offers just that: the chance to be a key enabler for safe operations, plant isolations, and controlled working environments.
As the Integration Department continues to evolve, this is an exciting moment to take on a role that directly contributes to keeping people safe while supporting the site’s wider mission. Are you ready to join a team where your expertise, judgement, and attention to detail make a meaningful difference every single day?
What will you be doing:
As the Permit Officer, you’ll play a central role in preparing, managing, and issuing permits and safety documentation in compliance with the sites’ safe system of work. You’ll work closely with the Configuration Officer and the wider Construction Office to make certain that plant isolations, authorisations, and technical processes are completed correctly and in full compliance with the site’s safe system of work.
This is a hands-on position that blends technical knowledge with methodical planning, helping maintain safety from the system across all permitted activities. You’ll also have opportunities to broaden your capability through training in electrical and mechanical authorisations, and a willingness to develop themselves in order to support the NRS mission. This may include achieving HV authorisation and authorisation to issue excavation certificates.
You will also:
- Prepare and isolate plant and the associated permits and safety documentation in accordance with the site's safe system of work.
- Ensuring all isolations and permits meet strict safety, quality, and environmental expectations.
- Achieve and maintain personal and technical skills to be fully trained and assessed to achieve Electrical Authorisations as required.
- Gaining and maintaining personal and technical skills to be fully trained and assessed to achieve Mechanical Authorisations as required.
This role includes participation in an on-call rota, supporting the site’s operational needs and ensuring continuous safety oversight.
Who Are We Looking For:
We’re looking for someone who brings a solid technical foundation and the confidence to work within a highly controlled operational environment. Alongside this, you’ll have spent time in an operational discipline, ideally with direct involvement in maintenance activities that have strengthened your understanding of safe systems of work and plant operations.
To thrive in this role, you’ll already hold (or be ready to attain) the electrical and mechanical authorisations required to operate safely and effectively across the site. You’ll be someone who consistently applies high standards, understands the importance of compliance, and is motivated to continue developing your technical capabilities to support the wider mission.
You will be:
- You’ll have a recognised professional qualification—such as a craft apprenticeship or BTEC supported by several years of hands‑on experience.
- Experience in preparation/use of safe system of work documentation would be an advantage.
- Experience in industrial maintenance.
- Experience in electrical and mechanical safety rules and able to achieve authorisations in both.
If you're driven, safety‑focused, and excited by the opportunity to develop your skills even further, don’t wait. Take the next step in your career and apply today—your next challenge awaits.
