Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established multi-skilled team based on Winfrith site. The Plant & Structures/ALES Team have responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Active Liquid Effluent System (ALES) and for decommissioning of redundant facilities including collection and off-site disposal of radioactive waste. We are looking to recruit an operative to enhance the team and help with the safe and compliant delivery of our targets and objectives.
Key Deliverables
- Hands-on operation of plant, systems and equipment on a nuclear facility
- Decommissioning work - removing radioactive, non-radioactive and contaminated plant and equipment for disposal.
- Operate waste volume reduction equipment including portable tools
- Carry out decommissioning/waste/decontamination activities using approved techniques in a radioactive environment as directed.
- Operate cranes, lifting equipment and forklift trucks etc
- Dismantle and remove hazardous structures, materials, cables, equipment, etc.
- Construction/ M&E work
- Provide support for routine maintenance and specialist contractors
Key Tasks to be successful, candidates will be expected to be prepared to:
- Demonstrate a good level of physical fitness and be comfortable working predominantly outdoors, including off-site locations such as the Sea Pipeline
- Undertake Confined Space training and achieve authorisations to work in Confined Spaces
- Undertake first aid training as necessary to be appointed Nuclear Occupational First Aider (NOFA)
- Wear full face, powered, Respiratory Protective Equipment
- Be available for Out of Hours on-call work

- Able to be a classified radiation worker in accordance with Ionising radiation regulations (i.e., Working in C3/R3 areas) - Essential
- Construction/M&E background - Essential
- Full UK driving licence – Essential
- Good experience of practical skills. E.g. use of power tools, manual handling, etc – Essential
- Qualified Slinger- Desirable
- Computer Literate. - Desirable
- OXY/propane cutting - Desirable
- Plant operator – Desirable (Telehandler)
- Experience in radioactive and non-radioactive waste management – Desirable.
- Previous experience of Confined Space Work - Desirable

- The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
