Operations Technician

Are you looking for a role where what you do each day has real purpose? Would you enjoy working where precision, teamwork and safety come together to support the future of the UK’s nuclear estate? If you want a position where you can see the impact of your work, this may be the right next step.

As an Operations Technician at Chapelcross, you’ll be part of a fast‑moving decommissioning programme that is progressing into one of its most interesting phases. This is practical, meaningful work that supports both national infrastructure and long‑term environmental responsibility. The role is site based with working hours of 07.30 to 17.15, Monday to Thursday, ideal if you want a four‑day working week.

What will you be doing

You’ll join a skilled operational team supporting the safe retrieval, handling and processing of radioactive waste in a safety‑critical environment. Your work will keep plant systems running smoothly, help maintain compliance and contribute to safe, efficient daily operations. If you enjoy hands‑on tasks, problem solving and learning how complex systems work, you’ll find plenty of variety here.

As you build your capability, you’ll become SQEP on key equipment, support improvement activities and play your part in wider site schemes including emergency response. You’ll gain practical experience with plant operations while contributing to the high safety and environmental standards expected at Chapelcross.

You will:

  • Operate and support plant systems within your proven competence, assisting with fault investigations and developing SQEP capability on key equipment.
  • Carry out surveys under IRR and RSA requirements to established procedures, providing technical input to current and future project activities.
  • Support a strong safety culture, contribute to team development and participate in site emergency and security roles. You may be required to become a classified worker in line with IRR requirements.

Who are we looking for

You will be someone who enjoys practical work, follows procedures carefully and takes pride in doing things the right way. Whether you already have experience in an industrial setting or are ready to take the next step with strong foundational skills, this role gives you room to grow while contributing to work that matters.

You’ll bring experience from an industrial environment plus GCSEs in Maths and English, or equivalent. Confident use of hand tools is important and experience with equipment such as cranes, FLTs or MEWPs would be an advantage. Most importantly, you’ll bring a proactive, hands‑on approach and the willingness to learn, develop and work safely in a regulated environment.

You should have:

  • Experience in an industrial environment and the required GCSEs or equivalent.
  • Confident use of industrial hand tools and ideally experience with cranes, FLTs or MEWPs.
  • A practical, safety‑focused mindset with the enthusiasm to build new technical skills.
