Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

"This position is based at Berkeley Site, Gloucester. Berkeley Site covers 27 hectares of special scientific interest on the bank of the River Severn that finished generating in 1989 and is currently in the decommissioning phase. Priorities for the Site now include removing all legacy wastes, emptying the active waste vaults and demolition and deconstruction of the majority of the buildings and facilities to ultimately return the site back to green field and re-use.
As such the Site and role has a range of radiological and environmental interests from:
- Ensuring the ongoing effectiveness of the environmental management system.
- Ensuring radiological best practices and compliance with IRR17
- Ensuring compliance with our Environmental Permit through ongoing oversight, assessment, review, reporting and regulatory engagement on our radiological discharges.
- Advising projects on best available techniques in the design and build of new plant and processes to aid in the demolition of existing buildings and removal of waste streams.
- Developing and driving radiological and environmental understanding within teams, ensuring good environmental awareness and practices across the site.
- Maintaining a fully serviced laboratory function to ensure radiological oversight and assessment.
The role of a Safety & Environment Engineer requires the individual to support site and the wider EHSS&Q team in undertaking these activities, acting as a point of contact for radiological and environmental advice, instructing on radiological and environmental standards, expectations and requirements, support in maintaining compliance with the relevant regulations and running the function’s support processes.
A such you will be expected to have a good level of professionalism, integrity and drive, be highly motivated, proactive and be able to work independently. You will need to ensure adherence to standards and expectations through good communication and team working with site teams, providing timely advice, influence and ultimately holding groups to account on expected standards.
The successful candidate will fulfil the required behavioural attributes and competencies, have experience in both a busy, dynamic working environment and in advising individuals and projects, and in a compliance role by implementing, monitoring and reviewing the necessary management arrangements and company standards and running site support functions including within a laboratory setting."
Please note this role is based on-site at Berkeley site. The contractual hours are Monday to Thursday, 07.25 - 17.00, perfect for someone looking for a four day week.
Key Deliverables
- Provide authoritative advice, support and guidance to the Site and Project teams to ensure compliance with company standards and relevant regulations.
- Monitor performance and provide advice as necessary to maintain and improve environmental standards.
- Ensure the production and maintenance of any required permits, reports, consents and other regulatory requirements, as required.
- Managing our on-site radiological Laboratories in maintaining our radiological and environmental assurance activities.
- Support the site and projects in identifying, developing and documenting Best Available Techniques (BAT).
- Implement identified good practice and promote and deploy across Site.
- Contribute to the effective development of, and deliver, training within own areas of specialism.
- Assisting with the day-by-day health physics system requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Educated to at least NQF level 5 / NVQ level 5 (essential).
- Certificate in Environmental Management (essential).
- Lead Auditor for ISO 14001 (desirable).
- A good knowledge and application of relevant environmental legislation (essential).
- Relevant experience in related roles (environmental advice and Laboratory management - desirable).

You will be joining a team of radiological and environmental advisors and engineers, led by the Head of Radiological Protection and Environment, and will form part of the wider Environment, Health, Safety, Security & Quality (EHSS&Q) function on the site.
No previous nuclear experience is necessary as training can be provided. NRS is also committed to continual development of its staff and so development opportunities exist should the individual want progression.
We also welcome applications for those looking to develop and therefore may not meet all the essential criteria for the role stated. In these circumstances there may be a lower grade offered for a development opportunity. The successful candidate would be considered on a case by case basis and supported with a PDP (Personal Development Plan) to enable a clear path for progression into the role.

- The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
